Advisors to the board
Dr. Lisa Umphrey, MD is the founder and president/CEO of ATLAS. She is originally from Colorado and currently lives in Sydney, Australia working as a Paediatric Adviser with Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF). Dr. Umphrey fell in love with eastern Uganda in 2008 while completing an international rotation, and ATLAS was born from the drive to keep supporting her Ugandan friends and partners. She loves music, the outdoors, travel, animals, and her friends and family.
Dr. Mary Kaminsky, MD is a pediatrician who completed medical school at the University of Illinois at Chicago and residency at the Medical College of Wisconsin/Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin. She originally visited Uganda in 2012 for an international elective with Dr. Umphrey, and she returned later as an attending physician with residents and medical students in tow. In her capacity as a board member and former volunteer, she has been an amazing resource for volunteers participating in ATLAS's international rotation program, and she has continued various research projects with the field teams. In her spare time, she loves traveling, photography, eating her husband’s delicious Columbian cooking, and spending time with her husband, daughter and two gorgeous white German shepherds.
Dr. Rachel Morrish, PhD is a Colorado native who trained in chemical engineering at the Colorado School of Mines. She earned her doctorate in the same field at the University of Arizona and returned to Colorado to work as a professor with Mines. She is happily married to her high school sweetheart and is mother to two beautiful boys, all of whom she moved to Trento, Italy for 6 months after winning the prestigious Fulbright scholarship! In her free time, she enjoys scuba diving, skiing, hiking, cooking, yoga, and spending time with her friends, family and adorable pups.
Dr. Laura Houser, MD grew up outside Chicago and is currently practicing as a general outpatient pediatrician for the University of Wisconsin in Madison. She is also the Associate Director of the Pediatric Global Health Track for the residents at UW-Madison. She tries to be as busy a world traveler as Dr. Lisa, but her two rambunctious children tend to keep her stateside. She joined the ATLAS crew after a visit to Uganda in 2013 to teach newborn resuscitation and hopes to return there with her family someday.
Dr. Miller is a pediatrician who completed her training at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. With a passion for global health, she has traveled extensively and spent several months working with our partners in Uganda and joined the board in 2018. Her particular interests include adolescent health, and she works with ATLAS to improve adolescent health practices in Uganda while helping to oversee the rotation program operations.
